Run Steam via the shortcut and login/authenticate into SteamĦ. Modify the Steam shortcut on the desktop to add the -no-browser attributeĮxample: "C:\Program Files\Steam\ Steam.exe" -no-browserĥ. Root Certificates Updater: (the download link and password are listed at the top) The goal here is to enable Steam to run on WinXP and play your Steam Library games. Ultimately, this guide only allows you run games on WinXP under Steam that you legitimately own, so this this guide is **NOT** in any shape or form condoning or contributing to piracy. Steam will not recognize or run games you don't own. The Steam setup and copy/transfer methods outlined below only works for your account and games you have purchased that are listed in your Steam Library tab. Hopefully, these instructions will help many of you get XP happily running Steam. I found a combination of things are needed to get Steam working on WinXP here in December 2020.
Just thought I would share my Steam setup and game copy/transfer steps here since there appears to be pieces of most of the steps scattered in the comments below but none appear to lead to success as-is or by themselves. Guide on Installing and Using Steam on WinXP by DeadSkullz - UPDATED I seem to have had great success using these "CS" IPs on the "UK - London" download server - append this in one line underneath "ConnectCache", or replace the line if it already exists: Since the November 26 build still connects to the Steam servers, this means that with this archived build, XP/Vista users will have some more time to enjoy their games legitimately, maybe even permanently if the community does something with this. In 2019, Valve is no longer rolling out XP/Vista compatible Steam Client builds, leaving many older PCs without a legitimate way to play many games. Thanks to u/TheArtBellStalker for providing this fix. You won't be able to download games without doing this step. IMPORTANT: Make sure you download config.vdf included in the directory listing and put it in the "config" folder in Steam's installation directory. Make sure you keep your root certificates updated with this: Steam on XP is dead for good now, rendering this package completely useless.~~ ~~(FORGET ABOUT THIS) Final edit: For a majority of users, Steam's new login system has broken all clients released before June 2020. By getting a packageinfo.vdf from a new Steam version, converting it to the old format with PackageInfoConverter (), and putting the output file into Steam\appcache, the package will work again! Just make sure to make packageinfo.vdf read-only, otherwise the installation will break again!
